Stephen Collins Foster was an American composer known for his parlour and minstrel music during the 19th Century. He wrote more than 200 songs. Read more at his wiki article. Foster wrote this song about his estranged wife Jane McDowell. It was first published in 1854. The lyrics allude to a permanent separation.
