This is a really excellent version, and has re-awakened my long-standing admiration of the piece (and my long-standing attempts to play it!). I agree entirely that it's a good idea to look at as many versions as possible: for years I played it from the superb arrangement by Yasuo Abe (which I bought in 1981!!), and later on, the versions by Frank Koonce and Tadashi Sasaki. There is also a very interesting arrangement available online by Richard Yates, transposed to D major!

Many thanks for this version, and I do hope that you'll be publishing scores (and videos) of the other movements of this Partita in the near future.
As I get better at playing relative lute tuning this renaissance piece has been a pleasure to learn. Thank you Bradford for pointing out how all the voices come into play. I love your video lessons.
Hi Bradford,
I enjoyed your lesson on Fantasia #1. I will say at the outset that I consider my skill level to be around low intermediate; mid-intermediate if you want to be generous. It has been very helpful to my playing to hear pieces played well on a high-quality instrument, so thanks for your video lessons.
This is the first piece I have played that tunes the 3rd string down to F#, and it has taken some getting-used-to. It has forced me to slow down and really concentrate and each measure, and that's a very good thing. Rushing through a piece is a reliable way to never master it.
Fantasia is a "simple" but very pretty piece, and I think your tempo is about right (~108, I think). It also provides a good exercise in sustaining select notes through and across measures.
Thanks again,
Mark Norman
Very well thought out and organized material. I refer to it daily and recommend to all beginners and those looking to advance their playing.
I would like to know which level this classical guitar is good for?
Thank you for making this available. I’’m 73 and this will go nicely into my repertoire.
I am in my 70’s and revisiting my classical guitar after many decades. I am loving the whole approach to the guitar offered by the website as a whole. My range is grades 1 - 3. And this piece is a joy to learn. Along with other pieces and easy to understand instruction you have rekindled my enjoyment of the classical guitar. Thank you so much from Australia.
Thank you so much, Werner! This helped me complete learning this beautiful piece.
I bought your BWV 996 guitar arrangement and I’m really enjoying it. It’s easy to follow along while listening and watching your videos—your explanations are clear, focused, and straight to the point, without spending time on basics that experienced players already know. On top of that, your tone and execution are beautiful. The way you shape each phrase makes the music sound genuinely divine. Thank you for such a high-quality arrangement and teaching.
Enjoyed the Bamboo Tree in Easy Folk tunes so bought this one. On the first piece, very easy, beautiful , nice break from practice!
Good transcription
The instructional videos are very helpful. Werner covers all facets of the pieces and also indicates why you should play something in one way or another. Fingering, melody lines, tips, everything is covered. What I really like is that the tabulature version is also included
Wow! Really nice lesson! Really liked the way you talked about the more tricky parts of the piece, especially the fingering in measures 70 and 71. Really makes that stretch in measure 71 easier to play as the fingers are in position. Thank you so much for the music to this beautiful piece!
I'm about 4 lessons in on Brad's new book on right hand fingering concepts and case studies. The first couple of lessons, it reinforced what I (hopefully) already do. Now, it's getting into areas that are giving me new ideas. For instance, alternatives for playing 5 and 6 string arpeggios, or choosing between rest and free stroke for sustain effect. Really glad I bought it, very helpful. The videos that go along with it are top notch, as always.
First off, I am a beginner. I have been playing for some 60 years but have not moved past someone else's book 2. I hav found that I can make progress with Bradford's Lessons. I watched the first video and thought this might help with understanding some of the lessons Bradford has set up. At first, I simply sat down and read. I got through the first 24 pages. It isn't a hard read and I could not see trying the various fingering ideas yet. Having practiced the first 55 open string exercises in the technique book I was pleasantly surprised to now understand why we practice the awkward fingering.
I have been having trouble with open string exercise 54. I realize that it is not an awkward fingering problem, my hands just don't want to do it. Thinking about the awkward examples I had before me I have gone back to exercise 54 with the the intent of mastering it and then working through the fingering examples.
At 78 years old, it is all about motivation and understanding. I have an arrangement for "The Band Played On." Fingering is suggested but to date I have not payed too much attention to it. Now that I am beginning to understand I will go back and re-learn it.
